With the celebration of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness turning 20 years old, we take a look at a piece of memorabilia from the album's first music video, "Bullet With Butterfly Wings". The music video features stars that were hand-cut from copper metal. One of these stars (pictured) is signed by the entire band!
The song went on to win the 1997 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance!
Note: When asked why the band chose "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" for the first video and single, Billy Corgan responded "the record company did a survey of K-Mart shoppers between 30 and 40 and this is the song they came up with". "This is the blue light special", said Chamberlin.
Twenty years ago, on October 23rd, 1995, Smashing Pumpkins debuted their first double album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. The record release party was held at the Riviera Theater, in Chicago, IL. Delabel (the French subsidiary to Hut Recordings – UK) released a rare, commemorative promotional CD (pictured) that was packaged with certain copies of Mellon Collie that features five tracks from that broadcast; “Tonight, Tonight”, “Zero”, “Today”, “Disarm”, and “Bullet with Butterfly Wings”. “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” was also officially released on this day as limited single in multiple countries.
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness went on to be certified Diamond (10 million copies sold) by the RIAA. The double album was a huge commercial success and was coupled with a grueling, multi-year, worldwide supportive tour. As a milestone in rock and roll nostalgia and mid-90s alternative music, October 23rd, 2015 will mark an album that is two decades old, but still full of substantive music that resonates to this day.

On October 4th, 1994, The Smashing Pumpkins released Pisces Iscariot – a collection of b-side material from Gish, Lull, Peel Sessions, and Siamese Dream. Many of the songs were only available as imports and a select few were previously unreleased. The collection of songs spanned multiple eras and release formats to include CDs and vinyl.
A hand-written demo tape titled, "Pisces Iscariot + Friends", was compiled by William Patrick Corgan sometime in 1993 after the supersonic success of Siamese Dream. The cassette features a multitude of additional songs from previous demo tapes, Starchildren, live recordings, and even more unreleased material. Creating yet another grand piece of memorabilia!
