Released 22 years ago today (7.27.93), Siamese Dream remains one of the most influential and consistent works in rock and roll history. The US vinyl pressing spans a wide spectrum of color variations, from purple to maroon, and red to hot pink. However, the UK vinyl pressing was exclusively black. How did this multicolor version that combines black, red, and blue swirls come into existence? That remains a mystery, but we know it is from the UK and, so far, is the only one of its kind. A well-deserved happy birthday to an equally diverse and mystifying album!
'The multi-color edition was my idea. So I'm guessing they made it, but whomever never sent it for approval.' -William Patrick Corgan

As we approach the anniversary of Siamese Dream (7/27/93), today we look at one of the more valuable bootlegged items.
During 1995-1996, a limited edition Siamese Dream wooden box appeared on the market. The box was limited to 1000 copies and was sold at Tower Records in Chicago, amongst other record shops. The item was a big hit, on popular auctions sites and it was a "must have" for collectors.
Despite the craze, there were questions surrounding its authenticity. The box contained an official copy of either the US or Netherlands CD. It also housed an official Siamese Dream 4 or 20 page booklet; however, there were reports of the box being sold without the CD and booklet. It was rumored to have stamped, reproduction autographs of the band as well, but those have never surfaced. Questions about different colored hardware and a dubious barcode were also red flags.
With years of questioning it's authenticity, Mr. Corgan helped in confirming this limited piece of memorabilia a bootleg.
Smashing Pumpkins’ management reached out to Brad Serling, CEO of NUGS.net, in Summer 2008 about the possibilities of a digital and physical release of the complete 20th Anniversary Tour. This US-only tour was named Celebrating 20 Years of Sadness, and consisted of 25 stops. At several cities double gigs were being played at the same venue, dubbed Black Sunshine and White Crosses.
Due to a recording melt-down, the 2008/11/16 show played in Mohegan Sun Arena, Uncasville, was never released. The remaining 24 shows, from the 2008/10/31 Newport Music Hall, Columbus gig all the way to the 2008/12/08 Auditorium Theatre, Chicago concert were released in January 2009 as a ‘boxed set’ called Tour Package.
When being asked about the release process, Brad Serling remembers: “It runs the gamut from band to band, but with the Pumpkins, the hard drives of the multi-track recordings were sent from the road each night to an engineer here in Los Angeles who mixes each night in his studio. He would then upload the finished product to NUGS.NET, where we would post the files on LiveSmashingPumpkins.com and prepare the CD masters. A friend of the band did the artwork for each label and would upload that to us as well. There are no restrictions, it’s “warts and all.” There were no edits, overdubs, or any other doctoring in the studio.”
The end result is a highly cherished live memorabilia from the extensive Smashing Pumpkins discography, which is currently out of print and hardly available on the well known auction sites…
"Tarantula" was the first single off The Smashing Pumpkins album Zeitgeist. This single was released on CD and 7" vinyl. For this weeks "Memorabilia Monday", we highlight an extremely rare "Tarantula" 7" uncut acetate. It appears to have been pressed for a 7″ single release, but this acetate was never cut from the blank lacquer.
-"Tarantula" was titled in honor of the German rock band Scorpions
- “Billy bought this guitar from this guy from Paris (James Trussart) who makes steel guitars and he brought a couple examples of his work to our rehearsal space. Billy grabbed one and plugged in into his amp and immediately started playing the riff from ‘Tarantula’ and the song was written pretty much on the spot.”
-Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin believe the song is a culmination of music they've been listening to all their lives, specifically the Scorpions and UFO.
-This week marks the 8th anniversary of the release of Zeitgeist (7/10/07)!!
spfreaks.com is now providing Memorabilia for Memorabilia Mondays
