So, where do I begin? Idea was to dive into vocals-lyrics-harmonies, easy as you pleas-y. But…
Well, hold up, we finished one (ANTI-HERO), the accursed ANAISE next. I say accursed because it’s a fitful tiger, that. And my psyche bears the scars of a day’s worth of twisting the changes around, only to end up back to where we started. Why, some would ask? Well…
The song is in E minor. And yours truly wrote a chorus figure that repeatedly sings a high G (top ‘o my range). Herr Howard wants full voice, I protest. So starts trying out a lower octave, falsetto, alternate harmonies. Failure. Herr Howard repeats his desire that I kill myself, I mean sing at the top ‘o my God-given means. So starts trying to modulate keys on hitting the chorus, changing the E to G, or A, or B flat, C minor, or C sharp, and then D. Hours and hours of hope falling flat to more fitful failure flash. Snooze.
Tried straight E again, close enough with some minor changes. Jeff said E flat was better (the base key of Mellon Collie, yadda), and a quick flop through it says that’s where we’ll begin. But I’m determined to wake up and invent a new wheel.
Thrilled to report that we now have our album in total, as top songs are arranged and set for drum tracking. So over the next 3 days I’ll be focusing on vocal arrangements, lyrics, and tweaking the overall aesthetics of the record as I hope it shall be. At least then I’ll be able to share a different narrative for a spell, and get off this merry-go-round we’ve all been on.
That said, unless I manage to write another corker in the next month, here lies the tracklisting for ‘MONUMENTS TO AN ELEGY’ (all titles subject to change):
With gatefold cover art being submitted today, we’ve been informed that lead time on a shipment is 6 weeks. So expect pre-orders to begin on ‘AEGEA’ in approximately 3 weeks.
In addition, and in coordination with the record’s street release, there will be an event at Madame Zuzu’s Teahouse; featuring both a listening party and a live performance by WPC (that will offer different impressions on ‘AEGEA’ as a work).
No details are as yet given whether the show and release party will be free and open to anyone, or a ticketed event. For details, check the MadameZuzus.com website.
More ANAISE to start, but this round with the so-so bridge/chorus moved to solo status (thus voiding the so-so melody and turning the change to something epicurious). Also altered elegiac end so that it had less resemblance to adapted ‘SFAS’ bit; and I was happy (for once). Amazing.
Forging ahead, we tackled other said titles. What were they, you ask? I can’t remember. Ended on DRUM AND FIRE; I do recall that. And that is a rocking now with ambrosia-foiled tom-toms (In a big country…)
So only 2 more need-serious of the strong-arm tactics: BEING BEIGE and TIBERIUS. Which sets into motion SP-A (secret plan A!).
You’ll know all about it soon enough, dear friends. I swear (often).
And though this work may not read as exciting as past posts, it ‘tis the time for finishing, helping us to set an end date to recording by 8.15.14. Seriously.
Focus was improving the song quotient of what is already an exciting piece. As in: shorten intro, build a better bridge, write a back chorus, tossing out the former middle 8 and inventing a new one; which also meant testing different keys to go to. From A minor to E, or D, or stay on C, or G (which was the key I was coming out of). D won!
Being tired, I was ready to go home but instead decided to stay and write a languid coda (nipped nicely thank you from a alternative tour version of ‘A Song For a Son.’
Reminds me of a conversation with a journalist about Oceania. He said: “Boy, you’ve done a good job on this album of ripping yourself off.” My reply, shocked as I was, went something like, “and how the fuck do you do that, seeing that I am I and if something came from me than it’s me that’s the arbiter of what’s mine.”
For those interested in a night of scintillating, acoustic-based music, The Ravinia Festival of Highland Park, IL is now offering tickets to see BC; in what is currently his only scheduled live performance for 2014. As announced previously, Smashing Pumpkins' Jeff Schroeder will be accompyning on guitar.
A long day for yours truly, being that I was up quite early to make my way downtown for interviews. And I’m grateful for those opportunities, so no complaining here. As a hometown Chicago has been generous to me, but never to a fault. As is our way.
Then a business meeting, then getting The Shredder lost as last night I managed to give myself a concussion (don’t ask) and was still a bit loopy.
With a PAWS event looming at Zuzu’s I knew our session would be curtailed, and the focus in that fell on bass sound (amp, instrument) and re-cutting our basic demos with core sounds. So over ANTI-HERO, ONE AND ALL, and DORIAN we confirmed arrangements with the notion that once we’ve gone through the other 6, we’ll dive into overdubs and vocal arrangements; giving us for the first time a pretty clear record of the album’s blueprint. Exciting stuff.
And one side note: there is an expectation in the modern marketplace that extra tracks be provided to certain retailers, which on the face of it is the current shing-a-ling of providing b-sides (something I’ve enjoyed through the years). Generally speaking we’ve leaned towards just recording the next best songs for that purpose; like BURNT ORANGE BLACK. But I’ve nixed that, and we’ll treat those b-sides as sessions of their own merit, using most likely cover songs. Certainly it’ll be more fun.
